Fiji VAT increase on imports; cuts on basics

2022 Budget introduces VAT rise on certain imports to fund foodstuffs rate cut

The Revised 2021-22 Fiji Budget has raised VAT from 9% to 15% on certain companies and imported goods and services. This rise replaced the Environment and Climate Adaptation Levy (ECAL).

This applied from 1 April 2022 until 31 March 2023 for businesses above the VAT registration threshold of FJD 100,000.

VAT on food basics has been reduced from 9% to 0%.

The goods including in the new 15% rate are:

  • Air conditioners
  • Dishwashers
  • Dryers
  • Electric Jugs
  • Electric Gas Stove
  • Electric Lawn Mowers
  • Hair Dryers
  • Microwaves
  • Refrigerators and Freezers
  • Mobile Phones
  • Televisions
  • Toasters
  • Washing Machine
  • Passenger Vehicles
  • Alcohol and Tobacco
  • Textiles, Clothing and Footwear
  • Perfume, Jewellery and Watches
  • Stereo/Sound Systems
  • Electrical Machinery
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities
  • Prescribed service under ECAL
