Ireland extends to 31 Dec 2030 energy temporary VAT cut to 9%

Temporary domestic gas and electricity cut from 13.5% to 9% extended for sixth time to 31 December 2030

The Irish government has confirmed in its 7 October 2025 budget it is extending the 9% VAT rate for gas and electricity from 1 October 2025 to 31 December 2030.

The current 9% rate, down from 13.5% is due to expire on 1 October 2025.

But the government is now set to extend it through to the start of 2031.

Oct 2023: Temporary domestic gas and electricity cut from 13.5% to 9% extended for third time to 31 October 2024

In today’s Irish Budget, it has been proposed to extend the 9% reduced VAT rate for gas and electricity for another 12 months. It is estimated that consumers will save an additional €90 for electricity and those who use gas will save an additional €62 during the 12-month extension.

May 2022 VAT rate cut

The government originally cut VAT on domestic heating gas and electric from 13.5% to 9% between 1 May and 31 October 2022. Solid fuels and and heating oil are excluded.   There will also be additional fuel allowance support payments.

Other European cuts on VAT on fuel and foods have been passed or are under review.
