Argentina cuts VAT on agro energy to ease farming costs
-
VAT on electricity used in agro-industrial irrigation systems cut to 10.5%
-
Applies specifically to energy consumption linked to irrigation activity
-
Effective from 1 April 2026
Argentina has introduced a targeted VAT reduction on electricity used in agro-industrial irrigation, as part of broader tax amendments under its Labour Modernisation Law. The move is aimed squarely at reducing input costs for the agricultural sector, which remains a cornerstone of the country’s export economy.
This represents a significant reduction from Argentina’s standard VAT rate of 21%, effectively halving the indirect tax burden on a key agricultural input.
Cost relief and production support during energy price spike
Energy is a major cost driver in irrigated agriculture, particularly in regions dependent on pumped water systems. By lowering VAT on electricity, the government is targeting:
- Improved cost efficiency for farmers and agro-industrial operators
- Protection of domestic production margins amid rising input prices
- Support for export competitiveness in global agricultural markets
The measure also aligns with a broader trend of governments using indirect tax levers to cushion sector-specific inflation pressures, particularly in energy-intensive industries.
