Agentic AI for VAT

Human-supervised Artificial Intelligence that interrogates VAT logic

VATCalc has developed the first VAT-dedicated agentic AI capability, connecting AI directly to our legislation-coded tax engine for VAT calculations and reporting.

Using our MCP server, AI can retrieve transactions, run VAT determinations, trace legislative rule chains and explain outcomes obligations and reporting on the logic applied within the VATCalc engine. No other provider of VAT technologies can offer this since their determination is based on custom rules, ERP tables etc, with no link to actual legislation.

For staff and business systems, this means new, AI-powered routes to get VAT right: human-led integration; invoice validation; VAT risk monitoring; and workflow integrations.

1. Human-led interrogation of complex VAT decisions

Tax professionals can now interrogate the VATCalc engine via AI directly on even the most complex transactions.

Because the AI can interrogate the VATCalc engine itself, the answers come from the system applying the law rather than from a chatbot reading documentation.

2. From ERP report to VAT Filer JSON

Using our MCP integration with Claude, agentic AI can analyse ERP transaction reports and map them into VAT Filer transaction files. This saves considerable time on accepting new data formats, from any ERP (or other system) and eliminate one of the biggest barriers to VAT automation

The agent is not limited to simple field matching. It can:

  • identify transaction structures across unfamiliar ERP exports
  • recognise inconsistent field naming conventions
  • infer relationships between datasets and identify missing information
  • propose transformation rules
  • generate VAT Filer-ready JSON transaction files
  • highlight exceptions requiring human review

This is particularly valuable when working with legacy ERP systems, customised reporting outputs and multinational organisations operating multiple finance platforms.

Instead of demanding perfect source data, the agent works with imperfect data and helps bridge the gap.

3. Invoice VAT validation

Extend VAT determination into AP and AR processes.

  • Extract transaction data from invoices or e-invoices
  • Run VAT determination via the VATCalc tax engine
  • Compare with supplier or system VAT coding
  • Flag discrepancies before posting

Reduces errors flowing into ERP systems and VAT returns.

4. VAT risk monitoring

Enable continuous, transaction-level VAT control.

  • Identify incorrect rates, missed reverse charges or place of supply issues
  • Analyse large datasets using engine-based logic
  • Prioritise risks by jurisdiction or materiality

Moves VAT control from periodic review to ongoing monitoring.

5. Workflow integration

Embed VAT determination into finance processes.

  • Pre-posting VAT validation
  • Integration with ERP and e-invoicing workflows
  • Support for return preparation and reconciliation

AI orchestrates the workflow, VATCalc performs the determination.

6. Scenario analysis

Support VAT planning and advisory.

  • Test alternative transaction scenarios
  • Re-run determinations with different parameters
  • Compare VAT outcomes across jurisdictions

Enables faster, more accessible VAT analysis.
