World’s first dedicated agentic AI tax engine

First VAT-dedicated agentic AI tax engine, with humans firmly in charge

VAT graduates from AI helpdesk to AI tax engine

So far, in VAT, AI has mostly meant chatbots explaining tax rules from documentation or workflow assistants rather than analysing the systems that actually determine VAT. At VATCalc, we have taken a different approach.

Our new MCP server connects AI directly to the VATCalc determination engine. This allows AI to retrieve transactions, run VAT logic, trace the rule chain behind a determination and explain the outcome. This is only possible because VATCalc is a legislation-coded, API-first VAT engine. So you get the speed and ingenuity of AI, but grounded in a human-supervised, market-proven tax engine.

For staff and systems, this means two new AI-powered routes to get VAT right:

  1. Human-led interrogation of complex VAT decisions

Tax professionals can now interrogate the VATCalc engine directly on even the most complex transactions.

Users can ask questions via their preferred LLM tools, such as Claude, to understand why a VAT treatment applied, which legislative rules were triggered and how the outcome would change if the facts were different.

Because the AI can interrogate the VATCalc engine itself, the answers come from the system applying the law rather than from a chatbot reading documentation.

This makes it far easier for tax teams to investigate unusual VAT outcomes, validate complex transactions and understand how legislation has been applied within the determination process.

And because this interrogation happens through our MCP-enabled architecture, the AI can retrieve transactions, run determinations and trace the legislative rule chain behind the VAT result in seconds.

  1. Invoice validation, VAT risk evaluation and workflow automation

Human-led interrogation is the first step.

The same agent architecture will support further objectives such as validating VAT on supplier invoices, monitoring transactions for VAT risk and embedding VAT determination directly into finance workflows.

But those are topics for another blog.

For now, we are focused on delivering the first practical step: helping tax professionals interrogate the VAT engine itself and finally understand the reasoning behind VAT outcomes.
