Sweden raises VAT registration threshold July 2022

Bill presented to hike Value Added Tax registration level to take thousands out of tax net; other COVID-19 support

Sweden is to increase its Value Added Tax Registration threshold to SEK 80,000 (approx €7,800) per annum from SEK 30,000. Businesses providing taxable supplies below this threshold may voluntarily opt to register.

The new threshold will apply from 1 July 2022. Read more about Swedish VAT in our country guide.

See European VAT registration thresholds across the 27 EU member states and other major states.

The change was included in the 2020 budget.  Other VAT changes included:

  • Option to rollover deferred VAT liabilities due to the COVID-19 disruption; payments may be delayed again from current due date of March and April of 2022
  • Shift from 12% to 6% reduced VAT rate for bicycle repairs and clothing
  • Temporary VAT exemption on COVID-19 related supplies
  • Withdrawal of advertising tax from 1 January 2022
