Ministry of Finance raises VAT registration threshold to acknowledge record inflation
Sweden’s Ministry of Finance has proposed raising the annual sales threshold for VAT registration from SEK 80,000 to SEK 120,000 (approximately €10,100). The threshold was last raised in 2022.
This new threshold will apply from 1 January 2025. It is subject to publication in the 2024 budget, and approval by Parliament.

Sweden is to increase its Value Added Tax Registration threshold to SEK 80,000 (approx €7,800) per annum from SEK 30,000. Businesses providing taxable supplies below this threshold may voluntarily opt to register.
The new threshold applies from 1 July 2022. Read more about Swedish VAT in our country guide.
The change was included in the 2020 budget. Other VAT changes included:
- Option to rollover deferred VAT liabilities due to the COVID-19 disruption; payments may be delayed again from current due date of March and April of 2022
- Shift from 12% to 6% reduced VAT rate for bicycle repairs and clothing
- Temporary VAT exemption on COVID-19 related supplies
- Withdrawal of advertising tax from 1 January 2022
