Belgian VAT number format changes

Standard format of Belgian VAT number updated

The Banque-Carrefour des Entreprises, a database for public records, is to change the format for Belgian VAT numbers.

The current structure starts with “0” and has nine further numbers to provide a unique VAT registration number for taxpayers.  This is represented as “0xxx.xxx.xxx”.

As this series is now nearly exhausted, the BCE is start to issue “1” prefixed numbers.  The Ministry of Finance is now alerting businesses to being able to adopt their accounting, ERP, billing and similar systems for the changes.

This number is also based on the company number for resident businesses, which instead of a 0 starts with a Z.
